Big Bird was ready to roll this weekend, I was not.

Years past I would have been out there
regardless of the conditions.

My tough guy status is under review, and I think I'll get my status removed, I'm getting soft. I'm not sure what has happened, but here are some non-tough guy behaviors I have observed in myself recently:

  • More wine consumption vs. beer consumption.
  • Riding a geared, suspended, 29'er mountain bike instead of my rigid single-speed.
  • Completing one lap at the Running of the Dogs 4 hour MTB race and pulling out because I was wet, cold, and afraid of getting sick.
  • Riding the train and driving rather than riding my bike.
  • Blogging. Tough guys don't blog, except for Elk.
  • Not going to the Michaux MTB race this past weekend because it was raining.

I really wanted to do the Monster Loop at Michaux Maximus this past weekend. I had the ?Ǩ?Big Bird?Ǩ bike ready to roll and my fitness is pretty good (must be all the wine). The weather forecast for Michaux was calling for 1-2 inches of rain on Saturday, and continueing through Sunday morning. the plan was to roll out from Philly on Saturday with Yozell and camp out at the start/finish area. I love camping, but camping in the rain is not my idea of a good time. I love riding my bike, but riding my bike in three inches of slop is not my idea of a good time... guess I'm no longer a tough guy. In years past I used to race through rain, snow, sleet, mud, and enjoyed it... no longer... guess I'm not a tough guy.

Maybe I'm just getting older and wiser. Has married life made me soft? What do you think?

Re: Tough Guy Status
1.) Wine versus Beer - depends on how big the hot tub is, and how much snow is on the ground.....good question though.
2.) Tough Guy Status - I used to be a tough guy too, until I stopped racing with broken bones and mono, then I became sissy and only raced with mild concussions and urinary tract infections.
3.) Single or geared - I quote my mom for this one," why do you need so many gears? You can run faster than that going up a hill you moron" My mom is awesome always sees the logic in things.
4.) Married versus single - Being single, I was a lonely tired bike racer, being married, I am a frustrated overcrowded has-been that never-was. Marriage has its upside. If asked, " would you ever get married again?" I'd have to say, "nah" solely because once you've eaten a snake or alligator, chicken still tastes more like chicken and is easier to swallow. No reason to go to the dark side, but I do love my wife, I'd definately date her all over again for sure.
5.) Michaux in the Mud versus watching others race - Michaux in the mud, for me, a throat full of vomit and a case of montezuma's revenge from a sea monkey infested hydration bladder tastes better than second guessing yourself watching your friends have all of the fun.
